What is an AI Copilot?

An AI copilot is a purpose-built assistant that works alongside a human inside an existing tool or workflow. It does not replace the human or act autonomously — it augments the human's capacity by handling repetitive cognitive tasks: surfacing relevant information, drafting documents, suggesting decisions, or flagging anomalies that need attention.

The term comes from aviation: the copilot does not take over the plane, but handles navigation, checklists, and communication so the pilot can focus on decisions that require judgment. In business software, the pattern is the same — the AI handles the mechanical processing, the human handles the calls that require context and accountability.

Copilot vs. Agent: What is the Difference?

The distinction matters in practice. A copilot waits for a human prompt before acting — it is reactive and assistive. An AI agent acts autonomously toward a goal, triggering its own next steps based on conditions in the environment.
