Content Enrichment
The process of adding structured metadata, context, or derived attributes to raw content — documents, records, emails, product data — to make it more useful for search, automation, and decision-making. Enrichment transforms unstructured information into something a system can act on.
What is Content Enrichment?
Content enrichment is the process of taking raw content — an email, a PDF, a product description, a supplier record — and adding structured information that makes it more actionable. That might mean extracting key fields from an invoice and tagging them with account codes, classifying an incoming document by type and priority, adding entity tags (supplier name, contract value, delivery date) to unstructured text, or linking a product record to a standardized category taxonomy.
Enrichment closes the gap between information that exists and information that can be used. A stack of supplier PDFs contains useful data — but until that data is extracted, labeled, and linked to the right records in your ERP, it is not accessible to any automated process. Enrichment makes it accessible.
How Enrichment Works in Practice
A typical enrichment pipeline runs in three stages:
Extract — pull specific fields or entities from the raw content (invoice number, line items, delivery address, payment terms)
Classify and tag — assign categories, labels, or metadata based on content (document type, priority level, relevant department, associated supplier)
Link — connect enriched content to related records in downstream systems (match invoice to open PO in ERP, link supplier name to vendor master)
Content Enrichment in Operations
For manufacturers and distributors handling large volumes of supplier documents, product data, and operational records, enrichment is the foundation of any meaningful automation. You cannot automate a three-way match between a PO, delivery note, and invoice if none of those documents have been enriched with the fields the matching logic needs. Enrichment is not the end state — it is the prerequisite for everything else.
