SAP Joule is the AI assistant inside SAP S/4HANA Cloud: a user asks it about a sales order, changes it, releases a blocked supplier invoice or hands production orders to one of its agents. We think it suits teams on current S/4HANA Cloud. Lleverage fits when the work starts in an inbox, runs on SAP ECC or crosses systems.
What is SAP Joule?
Joule is SAP’s AI copilot. It opens as a chat window inside SAP’s cloud applications, and SAP’s capabilities guide sorts what it does into three kinds: it finds the right app, it answers questions from SAP’s documentation, and it carries out tasks on your business data. For a growing number of tasks SAP ships agents, which run several steps and stop to ask the user when a decision is needed. SAP also makes Joule available as a custom engine agent inside Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft Teams, which it announced as generally available in January 2026.
In SAP S/4HANA, the guide covers two editions: S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition and S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition. SAP’s Architecture Center says the Private Edition integration is available only to RISE with SAP customers and runs through SAP Business Technology Platform, which reaches the S/4HANA system through the Cloud Connector. The guide has no section for SAP ECC, and SAP says ECC and on-premise S/4HANA customers who commit to moving most of their landscape to SAP Cloud ERP gain access to select AI scenarios.
What does SAP Joule do in S/4HANA, and where does it stop?
Three examples from SAP’s guide show the range. In sales, in Private Edition, a user asks Joule about a sales order and gets the header and items, the document flow, the price conditions and what blocks fulfilment: incomplete data, a billing, delivery or credit block, or a trade compliance issue. Joule changes those orders as well. It sets or removes a delivery or billing block, moves the requested delivery date, changes payment terms or the pricing date and updates the price, either on one order or across every order that matches a sales organisation, product, sold-to party or order type, which SAP runs as a background job. The questions and the single-order changes go through the API_SALESDOCUMENTS_AI_SRV service and a mass change needs the SD_MCC_SO_MASS_UPDATE_SRV service switched on as well, both for users with the internal sales representative role, in Private Edition from release 2021 SP09 for the questions and 2022 SP07 for the mass change, with a minimum support package per release line.
In purchasing, a user gives Joule an invoice number and fiscal year, and Joule releases a supplier invoice that is blocked for payment, cancels one, or shows its payment status; a purchaser can also move the delivery date on all the schedule lines of a purchase order at once. In production, the Production Planning and Operations Agent takes up to 20 production orders at a time, checks components and work centre capacity, proposes alternatives from the bill of materials or a new schedule, and releases the orders once the planner confirms.
Every one of those starts with a person: a question in the chat window, or a button such as Release in the Manage Production Orders app. And each works on documents that are already in SAP. For emailed purchase orders SAP describes two ways in: the Create Sales Orders - Automatic Extraction app, where a sales representative uploads a PDF or image purchase order in English or German, and an SAP Intelligent RPA bot that scans the inbox for a subject keyword and uploads the attachment to that app. Both produce a sales order request in S/4HANA. Before any of it runs, an administrator activates the Business AI packages in SAP for Me under an AI Unit licence and sets the number of users, and the transactional tasks need their OData services switched on in the backend.
How is Lleverage different?
Lleverage is an AI agent that runs a whole process next to SAP. It picks up customer orders from the shared inbox as they arrive, without a prompt, in an email body, a PDF, a spreadsheet or a portal export, matches the sold-to party, ship-to party and materials, checks price, quantity and delivery date against SAP, and creates the sales order in the right sales area and order type. On the purchasing side it reads supplier invoices in any layout and matches each line against the purchase order and the goods receipt.
What it is not sure of waits for the person you choose, in Teams, Slack or the inbox, with the reason attached. It connects to SAP S/4HANA and to SAP ECC, in the cloud or on your own servers, and Lleverage is an SAP partner. The same platform runs agents for Business Central, Exact, AFAS and the other systems around SAP. More on the SAP sales order page, and in Control, which covers thresholds, approvals and the audit trail.
SAP Joule vs Lleverage, side by side
The table puts Joule and its agents in SAP S/4HANA next to Lleverage. The middle column comes from SAP Help Portal, SAP’s Architecture Center, SAP Learning and SAP News, read on 20 October 2026, and says so where Joule is the stronger choice.
| SAP Joule | Lleverage | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | An AI copilot in a chat window inside SAP’s cloud apps, with agents for some multi-step tasks. | An AI agent that runs a whole process, such as order entry or invoice matching, next to SAP. |
| What starts the work | A user: a question in the chat window, or a button such as Release in the Manage Production Orders app. | The work itself: an order or invoice arriving in the shared inbox, picked up without anyone asking. |
| Orders and invoices that arrive by email | An app turns uploaded PDF or image purchase orders into sales order requests, in English and German, and an SAP Intelligent RPA bot can upload attachments from an inbox by subject keyword. | Read from the inbox as they arrive: orders as email text, PDF, Excel, CSV or portal exports, invoices in any layout, scans included. |
| What it does in SAP | In Private Edition, answers questions on sales orders and changes their fields, on one order or across a whole selection at header, item or schedule line level. Releases or cancels supplier invoices, moves delivery dates on purchase order schedule lines, and releases up to 20 production orders at a time through the Production Planning and Operations Agent. | Creates sales orders after checking price, quantity and date, and matches supplier invoices line by line against the purchase order and goods receipt. |
| Authorisations | Stronger here. Works under the user’s own SAP business roles and catalogs; in Private Edition, principal propagation limits each user to what they may already see and do. | A scoped connection per system, with read and write as separate permissions and a full audit trail. EU hosted by default. |
| SAP versions | S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition and Private Edition, the latter for RISE with SAP customers only. For SAP ECC, SAP offers select AI scenarios to customers who commit to moving most of their landscape to SAP Cloud ERP. | SAP S/4HANA and SAP ECC, in the cloud or on your own servers, reached behind the firewall. Lleverage is an SAP partner. |
| Beyond SAP | Spans SAP’s own cloud products, from SuccessFactors to Ariba and Concur, and can be reached from Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft Teams as a custom engine agent. | SAP next to Business Central, Exact, AFAS and others, and the mail, Teams and Slack your team already uses. |
| Getting started | Business AI packages activated in SAP for Me under an AI Unit licence, business roles assigned, OData services switched on. Private Edition also needs SAP BTP, identity services and the Cloud Connector. | Forward deployed engineers build the first process with your team on real documents, so work comes off the desk in the first weeks. |
| Fits best when | You run current S/4HANA Cloud and the people who need help work in SAP all day. | The work starts in an inbox, runs on SAP ECC, or crosses several systems. |
When is SAP Joule enough?
We think Joule is the right first step if you run S/4HANA Cloud on a current release and the people who need help already work in SAP all day. A sales representative who wants to know why an order is stuck, or a buyer who has to release a blocked invoice, saves clicks in the system they already work in, under the business roles they already have, which is why Joule is the first thing to switch on for that kind of work. On Public Edition there is nothing to connect, because Joule is part of the system. Private Edition runs through SAP BTP and the Cloud Connector, which your SAP team sets up once.
When do you need more than SAP Joule?
We think an AI agent beside SAP is the better fit in these cases:
- The work starts outside SAP. Orders and invoices arrive by email in every format, and someone still has to read them before Joule has anything to look at.
- You run SAP ECC, or S/4HANA on your own servers outside RISE. SAP’s guide describes Joule in S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition and Private Edition, the latter for RISE with SAP customers, and offers ECC customers select AI scenarios only when they commit to moving to SAP Cloud ERP.
- You want the routine cases done without anyone asking: the order created, the invoice matched, and only the exceptions sent to a person.
- SAP is one of several systems, and a subsidiary on Business Central or Exact needs the same process.
The two can run side by side: Lleverage creates the documents, and your team uses Joule to ask about them and to change them in bulk. Our article SAP Joule explained covers cost and migration in more depth, and our guide to filling SAP gaps without customising SAP covers the integration patterns.
Frequently asked questions
Is SAP Joule available for SAP ECC?
SAP’s Joule capabilities guide covers S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition and Private Edition and has no section for SAP ECC. SAP says ECC customers who commit to moving most of their landscape to SAP Cloud ERP gain access to select AI scenarios. Lleverage connects to SAP ECC and S/4HANA, including systems on your own servers.
Can SAP Joule create sales orders from emailed purchase orders?
Joule works on sales orders already in SAP: it answers questions about them and changes fields such as delivery blocks and requested delivery dates. For emailed orders SAP describes an upload app for PDF or image files in English and German, and an RPA bot that uploads inbox attachments. Lleverage reads them from the inbox and creates the order.
What do you need before you can use SAP Joule?
According to SAP Help Portal, an administrator activates the Business AI packages in SAP for Me, which needs a licence for the AI Unit SKU released in May 2025, and sets the number of users. Each capability then needs its business role or catalog, and SAP’s Architecture Center adds that transactional tasks need their OData services switched on.
What are SAP Joule agents?
Agents are Joule capabilities that run several steps and ask the user when a decision is needed. One example in S/4HANA is the Production Planning and Operations Agent: it checks components and work centre capacity for up to 20 production orders, proposes alternatives or a new schedule, and releases the orders once the planner confirms.
Can SAP Joule and Lleverage run side by side?
Yes. They do different jobs. Lleverage works from the inbox, creates sales orders and matches invoices without anyone asking, and sends exceptions to the person you choose. Joule helps the people who work in S/4HANA find, check and act on those documents afterwards. Neither needs the other, and each reaches only what you allow it.
