Invoice capture is Microsoft’s add-on for Dynamics 365 Finance: it reads PDF and image invoices with AI Builder, finds the legal entity, vendor and purchase order, and transfers clean invoices to D365 as vendor invoices. We think it suits teams already on Power Platform with tidy PO invoices. Lleverage fits when exceptions need a buyer or the warehouse.
What is Invoice capture in D365 Finance?
Invoice capture is a Microsoft solution for accounts payable in Dynamics 365 Finance. It is installed from Microsoft Marketplace into the Power Platform environment linked to Finance, and Microsoft supports it on integrated Power Platform environments only. The invoices and their original files are kept in Dataverse, and AP clerks work in the Invoice capture app, which reads its lookup lists from Finance at runtime.
Invoices come in through channels: a Microsoft 365 Outlook or Outlook.com mailbox, a OneDrive or SharePoint folder, or a direct upload. The accepted files are PDF, PNG, JPG, JPEG, TIF and TIFF, at most 20 MB each. Reading is done by AI Builder’s prebuilt invoice processing model, which Microsoft lists for more than 30 languages and locales, Dutch and German among them. Finance customers get 100 captured invoices per tenant per month, and buy more in monthly blocks of 1,000.
What does Invoice capture do, and where does it stop?
After reading, Invoice capture derives the fields Finance needs that are not printed on the invoice. The legal entity comes from the company name and address, the vendor account from the vendor’s name, address or tax number in that legal entity, then the item number and the currency. Validation follows: mandatory fields, totals, sales tax, the unit of measure against the purchase order line, and a confidence score per field, with an error below 60% and a warning below 90% by default. An invoice with no errors is transferred by a background task that runs every hour by default, and Finance creates the vendor invoice. Cost invoices can go to an invoice journal instead.
Microsoft says the prebuilt model can’t handle more complex invoice layouts. A custom model trained on your samples handles them, and then returns no confidence scores, no line positions and no currency codes. When an invoice line can’t be tied to a purchase line, the AP clerk links it by hand. Continuous learning remembers the clerk’s choice of legal entity, vendor and item once the invoice is transferred. The 2026 wave 1 release plan adds AI header derivation, a side-by-side invoice and purchase order view and charge recognition, in public preview since September 2026 with no general availability date, and lists line-level derivation as future direction.
XML e-invoices are not among Invoice capture’s file types. For PEPPOL and the German XRechnung in UBL syntax, Dynamics 365 Finance has a separate import through Electronic reporting, which reads the files from a SharePoint folder and creates pending vendor invoices.
How is Lleverage different?
Lleverage is an AI agent for the accounts payable run next to Dynamics 365 F&O. It works the finance mailbox your vendors already write to, shared mailboxes included, and reads PDFs, Word and Excel files, CSV exports, scans and phone photos. It checks each invoice against the purchase order and the goods received, settles the normal case and routes the discrepancy to a person. The agent scores how sure it is of every piece of work, and below the line you set, a person decides.
Each question goes to whoever can answer it: a short delivery to the warehouse, a price that moved to the buyer. They can reply from Lleverage, or in Teams or Slack. Once the answer comes in, the agent finishes the invoice. Ratings on its work build up in its Skills, the agent drafts an improvement, and a person approves the change before it goes live. A new rule can also start with a screen-share call where your AP lead shows the agent how they handle a hard vendor. The agent never releases a payment.
Forward deployed engineers set up the F&O connection with your team and build the first process on your own invoices. More on the AP automation page and in Control, which covers roles, approvals and the audit trail.
Invoice capture in D365 vs Lleverage, side by side
The table puts Microsoft’s Invoice capture next to Lleverage on the points that decide a choice for an AP team on Dynamics 365 Finance. We read Microsoft Learn’s Invoice capture and AI Builder pages and the Lleverage docs on 28 October 2026.
| Invoice capture (Microsoft) | Lleverage | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it lives | Stronger here. A Microsoft solution inside your Microsoft estate: installed from Microsoft Marketplace into the Power Platform environment linked to Finance, with its lookup lists read live from Finance. | A separate platform. Its F&O connection is set up with our team and signs in with a Microsoft account whose permissions in F&O decide what the agent can see and change. |
| How invoices arrive | Channels on Microsoft 365 Outlook, Outlook.com, OneDrive and SharePoint, plus direct upload. PDF, PNG, JPG, JPEG, TIF and TIFF files up to 20 MB. | Yes: the finance mailbox, shared mailboxes included, with PDFs, Word and Excel files, CSV exports and photos. A system with no ready connection gets a custom integration. |
| Reading the invoice | AI Builder’s prebuilt model, listed for more than 30 languages and locales including Dutch and German. Complex layouts need a custom model, which returns no confidence scores and no line positions. | Yes: reads text, scans and photos with OCR, whatever the layout, and scores how sure it is. Below the line you set, a person decides. |
| Vendor and legal entity | Derives the legal entity from the company name and address and the vendor account from name, address or tax number. A clerk classifies what it can’t derive. | Yes: looks the vendor up in F&O company by company, since most actions start by picking the legal entity, and asks a person when a vendor is new. |
| Purchase order lines | Links invoice lines to purchase lines by order, item, category and description, or the clerk links them by hand. Line-level derivation is listed as future direction. | Yes: reads the purchase order from F&O and checks each line against the order and the goods received, then settles the normal case. |
| Exceptions | An error stops the invoice for an AP clerk in the side-by-side viewer of the Invoice capture app. A warning stops it too when the review type is set to Warning. By default an error is below 60% confidence, a warning below 90%. | Yes: the agent sends the question to the buyer or the warehouse and carries on with their answer. |
| Learning | Continuous learning repeats a clerk’s legal entity, vendor, item and charge code for later invoices with the same context. | Yes: Skills collect ratings on the work, the agent drafts an improvement and a person approves it. It also learns a process shown on a screen-share call. |
| Access and audit | Power Platform business units and security roles decide which invoices a clerk sees. Each invoice keeps a history log of its errors and warnings. | Yes: roles per area, single sign-on, audit history of who changed what, and per connection the actions it may use and which need approval. |
| Set-up and cost | An integrated Power Platform environment, the finance and operations virtual entity, AI Builder connections and roles such as InvoiceCaptureOperator. 100 captured invoices per tenant a month included, more in monthly blocks of 1,000. | Yes: forward deployed engineers build the first process on your invoices, and it typically runs supervised within a few weeks. One monthly price per agent, with no usage bills. |
| Beyond vendor invoices | Built for vendor invoices in Dynamics 365 Finance. | Yes: the same F&O connection creates sales orders and quotations and looks up customers and released products, so order intake runs on the same platform. |
When is Invoice capture enough?
We think Invoice capture is the right start when most invoices arrive as clean PDFs that quote a purchase order, your vendors are already set up in each legal entity, and the Power Platform environment linked to Finance is in place. Then the derivation, the validation and the hourly transfer can take a good part of the volume without anyone opening it, and the rest stays with clerks who know the side-by-side viewer.
Testing it costs little: Finance customers get the first 100 captured invoices a month included, and a file that a file filter drops does not count. Run a normal month through it before you buy anything else.
When do you need more than Invoice capture?
We think an AI agent like Lleverage is the better fit in these cases:
- The hard part is the exceptions. A short delivery or a moved price needs a buyer or the warehouse, people who do not work in the Invoice capture app.
- Vendors send complex layouts, and a custom AI Builder model would cost you the confidence scores and line positions.
- Invoices also come as Excel or CSV files, which are not among Invoice capture’s file types.
- You want each correction to become a rule that a person signs off and can read and edit later.
- The same team also runs order intake, and you want one platform for both sides of D365 F&O.
Our guide to three-way matching walks through the checks line by line, and our post on template-free invoice data capture sets OCR next to AI reading. For the order side, the D365 F&O order page shows how the agent creates sales orders.
Frequently asked questions
What is Invoice capture in Dynamics 365 Finance?
A Microsoft solution, installed from Marketplace into the Power Platform environment, that reads vendor invoices with AI Builder. It derives the legal entity, vendor account, items and currency, then transfers invoices without errors to Finance. Invoices with errors wait for an AP clerk to review them, and so do warnings if you set the review type to Warning.
How many invoices does D365 Invoice capture include?
Dynamics 365 Finance customers get 100 captured invoices per tenant per month. More are bought as Electronic Invoicing blocks of 1,000 transactions a month, use it or lose it, so Microsoft says to buy for your peak month. Only captured invoices count: a file the file filter drops does not. Lleverage is one monthly price per agent.
Does Invoice capture read Dutch and German invoices?
Yes. AI Builder’s prebuilt invoice model lists Dutch (Netherlands) and German (Germany) among its supported languages, and it returns a KVK number field for Dutch companies. Microsoft adds that the prebuilt model can’t handle more complex layouts. A custom model covers those but returns no confidence scores, so test it on a month of your own vendors.
Can Invoice capture handle invoices without a purchase order?
Yes. A configuration group supports purchase order, non-purchase order and cost invoices, and cost invoices can be transferred as a vendor invoice or an invoice journal. For non-PO invoices Microsoft recommends a default procurement category per vendor. In Lleverage, an invoice without an order goes to the approver your rules name.
How does Lleverage connect to Dynamics 365 F&O?
Our team sets the connection up with yours, because it needs configuration specific to your environment, and you sign in with a Microsoft account that has access to F&O. That account’s permissions decide what the agent sees and changes, and each action can be set to need approval first. More on integrations.
Can Invoice capture and Lleverage run side by side?
Yes, if each has its own channel. We think a sensible split is to let Invoice capture take the clean PDF invoices against purchase orders in one mailbox, and let Lleverage take a second mailbox with the Excel files, the complex layouts and the variances that need a buyer or the warehouse to answer.
